Farmers Markets across the country are growing in popularity at an amazing pace!  We in Abingdon, Virginia are lucky enough to have numerous farmers who care enough about their community to supply a bountiful harvest each year at our local market as well.  We believe in the farmers market for several reasons:

--  When consumers buy fresh foods, they buy the most nutritious foods.  The amount of nutrients and vitamins lost during the preservation and shipping process is astounding.  Most of the goods sold in Abingdon Farmers Market are picked or packaged within a couple days of being sold at the market.

--  When consumers buy food from the farmers market, they are supporting the local economy.  In smaller towns such as Abingdon, we feel it is important to preserve the roots of the community.  By purchasing goods locally, you are sending a message that you believe your town can overcome big box chains!

--When consumers buy food from the farmers market, they are supporting green space in the community.  Farmers work hard for their living because they love what they do...not for the money!  Farming is just like any other business though.  If the farm does not provide enough of a profit for the farmer to consider the operation an asset, it will be forced to close.  When most farms are sold, they become numerous smaller lots that will never again see a fruitful harvest.  There is a saying in the farming community..."Concrete is the last thing ever produced on a piece of land".

Directions: Take Exit 17 off I-81 and follow directional signs into downtown Abingdon (this is Cummings Street).  Just prior to the stoplight on Main Street, you will see the market on the left.  It is an open-sided, "L-shaped" building with a green tin roof.  Turn left onto Remsburg Drive and park in the lot across from the Abingdon Farmers Market building.
